How the Chase Sapphire Reserve® Stacks Up

Pros

Cons

$300 Travel Credit + Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit

Each year, you’ll receive a credit of up to $300 for travel expenses and every four years, you’ll earn up to $100 towards Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. This makes the card ideal for frequent travelers who want to enjoy these benefits while earning rewards.

Boost Your Rewards with Chase Ultimate Rewards®

With the Chase Sapphire Reserve, you can increase your point value by 50% by redeeming them through Chase Ultimate Rewards®. Cardholders can earn up to 10 points per dollar on hotels and car rentals when making purchases through the portal. Plus, you’ll receive some of the highest reward rates available for travel and dining.

High Annual Fee

The annual fee for the Chase Sapphire Reserve is $550, which can seem steep. However, if you travel frequently and take advantage of the long list of benefits and perks, it’s easy to recoup the cost.

Limited Luxury Airport Lounge and Hotel Options

While the card does offer access to VIP airport lounges, it lacks some of the luxury options provided by its competitors. The same goes for hotel partners, where some competitors offer more attractive options.

Wide Ranging Collection of Travel Protection Benefits and No Foreign Transaction Fees

This card offers one of the most robust collections of travel protection benefits available. You’ll also enjoy the convenience of no foreign transaction fees when you use the card outside the U.S.

3X Points on Travel and Dining with No Limits

The Chase Sapphire Reserve offers a generous 3X points on travel and dining with no limit on the number of points you can earn. This makes it an excellent card for anyone who frequently dines out or travels

No Introductory APR Period

The Chase Sapphire Reserve does not offer an introductory APR period. This means you’ll need to pay your balance in full each month to avoid interest charges.

Additional Annual Fee for Authorized Users

If you want to add an authorized user to your account, you’ll need to pay an additional $75 annual fee on top of the $550 annual fee

Bottom Line

If you’re a frequent traveler who values luxury perks, the $550 annual fee for the Chase Sapphire Reserve may initially seem daunting. However, this top-of-the-line card offers an impressive array of benefits, such as exclusive access to select luxury hotels and resorts, and Priority Pass™ Select membership for VIP airport lounge access. With a $300 travel credit and one of the most valuable credit card rewards programs, the Sapphire Reserve is considered one of the Big 3 premium travel credit cards. If you can take advantage of all the benefits it offers, you’ll easily recoup the annual fee and still come out ahead.
